Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Books Set In A Scary Setting - Jens Choice

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week we are given a different top ten to complete. For more information and a list of past and future topics, go here.

This weeks topic allowed us to decide what kind of setting we wanted to choose to make a list on, Jen has chosen scary settings and Laura has chosen fantasy world settings so this week there will be two individual Top Tens...

Some of the places aren’t really scary, it is mostly what happens there really that scares me. For example Eel Marsh House wouldn’t necessarily be deemed scary, except for the ghost.

1. The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. Set in Eel Marsh House, isolated, desolate and haunted. Very gothic.
2. Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt. Black Springs a town, normal in appearance, but the resident witch with her stitched up eyes and mouth, may just make living there a tad uncomfortable.
3. Ash by James Herbert. Mental health unit in Scotland with a difference. This posh classy retreat holds its fair few secrets.
4. Nightmare Park by Linda Hoy. A theme park, were children go missing.
5. The Apartment by SL Grey. This Paris apartment is a bit different, bags of hair in the wardrobe and a creepy next door neighbour.
6. Fellside by MR Carey. A women’s prison, were the dead can walk into your dreams and the wardens are as corrupt as they come.
7. Murder House by James Patterson with David Ellis. A vacant dilapidated beach house, were murders took place and are still taking place. Anyone fancy a holiday?
8. Fun House by Diane Hoh. This Fun House isn’t fun.
9. The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde. Victorian house with a resident ghost, but this ghost has problems.
10. The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. Opera House with its labyrinth of tunnels and lakes and a man in a mask.
